Give Ozarks Day

The outlook is quite brilliant for the fateful ninth this May

where all the dreamers and doers are coming out to play.

The Community Foundation, with the help of BKD,

have challenged all the non-profits, “Raise money creatively!

On Twitter and on Facebook, on Instagram if you dare,

post videos, blogs, and all the pictures that you care.

Use hashtags, out think the box, countless new friends try to make —

twenty-four hours of finding new donors, precious dreams at stake.”

We popped our knuckles, stretched our brains, and looked far down the road —

to advocate for literacy, for future readers bear the load,

to keep providing services, tutors, and books all for free —

we’re building our endowment, $15K for OLC.

On that day so sacred, those hours numbering twenty-four

We’ll post two dozen GIFs and quotes, leaving no time to be bored.

Taking our cue from The Princess Bride, we’re hashtagging “Read It Again,”

remembering the joy of a beloved tale, a story becoming a friend.

You are formally invited. Be a partner! Spread the word!

Give Ozarks Day is coming, raise your voice, dare to be heard!

For there are kids and adults who are desperate to learn to read.

Inconceivable? Not really, just new friends who are in need.

On May 9, 2017, the Ozarks Literacy Council will be participating in a community-wide, social-media driven, fundraising blitz sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks (CFO) and BKD Wealth Advisors.

For almost 50 years, OLC has been providing free, one-on-one tutoring services to adults and children throughout southwest Missouri. We are attempting to raise $15,000 and build our endowment, hoping to continue advocating for literacy in the Ozarks for the next 50 years.

In preparation for the big day, for the first week of May, we will be posting videos of local celebrities sharing their favorite childhood books. Also during that time, OLC will be hiding copies of The Princess Bride in random locations throughout town.

Thanks to a matching grant from CFO and the generosity of Pam and Bernie Burrier, we are only $5,000 away from reaching our goal!

To participate as a virtual advocate for literacy, follow and share our efforts on Twitter or Facebook.
